Don’t forget your Random Acts of Kindness!

You may remember that this year, when purchasing your Shambala 2018 tickets, there was some new information that appeared as part of the process – regarding Random Acts of Kindness:

Every year, we are touched by the community spirit and kindness that you, the audience, bring to Shambala. With this in mind, we think we can up the ante and create something genuinely astonishing by embracing the idea of random acts of kindness. We invite each and every one of you to dream up amazing, unexpected, beautiful and bonkers acts of completely random kindness and bring them with you!

Now Summer doesn’t seem such a distant pipe dream, we wanted to check in with you all about this  idea. We know a lot of you will have already dreamt up some amazing, creative ideas, but if anybody is struggling for suggestions, we’ve put together some potentials, below. Equally, feel free to just come along and see what emerges over the weekend, as it seems to do…

SHARING IS CARING

Sharing a piece of yourself and what makes you happy with someone is pretty powerful. Why not bring a book you’ve read, that blew your mind, and gift it on to a likeminded soul you’ve bonded with in the wee hours of the morning? Give out postcards with the track title and artist name of a song that never fails to pick you up, or give out homemade mixtapes. If you’re particularly tech-savvy, share a QR code or bluetooth beam an MP3 to a willing stranger, to give them something to take beyond the field.

LEAN ON ME, WHEN YOU’RE NOT STRONG

Share the load – arriving at a festival after a long journey is exciting and wonderful, but boy can it be bogged down by bags. Spot someone struggling with camping paraphernalia? Why not offer to take a bag or too. We imagine there’s a special place reserved in Heaven/Nirvana/Paradise/Valhalla/Wherever for strangers who help put up tents, too.

WRITE A LETTER OR POSTCARD AND HIDE IT FOR SOMEONE TO FIND

Write a note or postcard with a positive, uplifting message and hide it somewhere for somebody to find – our Dearest Lovely Human workshop (in the Random Workshops tent) will be holding a workshop where you can do just this. You never know who might pick it up and really, really need it.

PSSSSST! YOU DIDN’T HEAR THIS FROM ME BUT…

Last year, in the Big Debate survey, you lot felt we didn’t have enough ‘Secret Venues’ anymore – as all our old secret spots are now more or less public knowledge. Without wanting to say much more, let’s just say we listened. If you stumble across a secret venue this year, whisper it to someone you’ve never met and share the magic.

SHAMBALA ROCKS!

Decorate a rock or pebble (nail varnish, sharpies or paint all work well) with a beautiful pattern or lovely message and place it somewhere it will be found. This has become something of a phenomenon in Bristol, and beyond (we think it may have started in Beverley, Yorkshire) with dedicated Facebook pages where people can post their findings – so if you find one, use the hashtag #ShambalaRocks on twitter or instagram, or send us them on Facebook – we’d love to see!). You can either bring your own pre-decorated rocks to the festival, or bring a ‘naked’ rock to The Family Yurt, where they have art supplies to get you decorating!

GOT HEALING HANDS?

If your massage skills are legendary amongst your family and friends, offer them out to someone who needs it – please ask first though, and don’t be offended if you’re politely turned down!

SAY IT WITH DANCE.

Give the gift of a personalised, interpretive dance. Because it’s always, always funny. Alternatively, if you have a banging go-to dance routine, teach it to a bunch of passing Shambalans, who can in turn pass it on to another group until the festival turns into one giant musical.

BECOME THE BOG ROLL FAIRY

Fashion a tutu from toilet roll and skip merrily around the toilet queues, letting people tear off what they need. (Disclaimer – we do try and keep the toilets stocked with paper, but shortages can happen when things get busy).

COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL

Dab hand with a paint brush? Bring along some natural face paints and offer to create a masterpiece on somebody you don’t know, free of charge.

BRING A SPARE

Come armed with a spare reusable cup of bottle, and give it to someone who’s misplaced of forgotten theirs. They’ll love you for it, and so will the planet. Double win.

GIVE IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY NOW

Get stuck into one of our amazing on-site craft workshops and gift whatever you create to a stranger. The Craft Area is on hand for traditional skills like leather work, willow weaving and jewellery making, the Carnival Tent will show you how to create amazing Avant Garden Costumes for the carnival, and you can even make some nipple tassels or crochet a merkin in the Random Workshops tent – a god send for those who suffer from uncomfortably chilly nether regions.

PAY IT FORWARD

Okay, this one is monetary, and is only to be considered if you have the cash to spare, but booking an additional activity such as SUP Yoga or a session in the Shambala Springs, and passing it forward to a stranger would be an incredible gesture.

Hopefully that’s enough to get your imaginations fired up and your kindness glands working overtime. We are beyond excited to see this all come together in August.

Love, The Shambala Team x
