Every year, our Sustainability Team work alongside our crew of inspiring traders to ensure that our sustainability standards are met with flying colours.
During the weekend our team score each trader against a pretty hefty list: including, energy efficiency; ethical food procurement; waste reduction and travel miles; as well as finding out about any extra environmental or social initiatives traders themselves have implemented. As ever, we are hugely grateful to all of our traders for being good sports and showing genuine commitment to serving up conscious, sustainable and mouthwatering grub. Through their efforts we can push Shambala to be as energy and waste efficient as possible!
Our annual Inspirational Trader Awards is where we celebrate the traders that truly went above and beyond. We’ve even added the Change-Maker award, to celebrate the innovations of Shambala’s traders – one simply wasn’t enough!
AND THE WINNER IS… LA BONNE CREPE!
Last years’ runners up, Christophe and his amazing team now take the mantle of Inspirational Trader 2018. Originally from Brittany, La Bonne Crepe have become somewhat of an establishment in Bristol. Undisputed rulers of the crepe game, they show how a commitment to local produce and a “menu du jour” philosophy is a model for ethical and delicious food trading. We were mightily impressed by their holistic approach to trading. Not only did they supply a hand-out of their own environmental policy, La Bonne Crepe have a comprehensive recycling policy, and plant oak trees year-round to offset their travel miles. Any left over food is taken to the Wild Goose shelter in Bristol and Christophe pays his staff over living wage, really showing a commitment first and foremost to people and planet. Plus, music to any Francophile vegan’s ears, La Bonne Crepe have ditched eggs to make their pancakes plant-based. Massive well done to the whole La Bonne Crepe team!
CHANGE-MAKER AWARD… PIZZA AND PUPPETS
Awarded for “Audience Engagement and Education”
Pizza and Puppets is the marriage of two things we never knew we needed. Aside from serving up seriously tasty, hand-made and locally sourced pizza, Pizza and Puppets offer free puppet workshops designed to inform and entertain Shambalans and their kids about foraging, food and the importance of washing up. We were particularly impressed by how Gaetan’s team worked to promote local produce with community growers in Somerset; inspirational on and off the field!
CHANGE-MAKER AWARD… HEDGEROW CORDIALS
Awarded for “Minimal Impact”
First time at Shambala, Hedgerow Cordials is the fruity, juicy love child of avid foragers, Charlotte and Ross. 95% of their ingredients came from a 30-mile radius of their home – seriously impressive. Committed to seasonality, Hedgerow constantly dream up new cordials and home ‘ugly fruits.’ We salute their efforts to minimise waste and connect us to the nature on our doorstep, one tincture at a time!
CHANGE-MAKER AWARD… THE CHAI SHOP ORGANIC
Awarded for “Sustainable Business Ethos”
As Shambala old timers, The Chai Shop Organic know the score (claiming the Inspirational Trader accolade back in 2016). This year they’ve topped all previous efforts to reduce energy consumption and have gone completely off grid! Not only are their legendary falafels made using their famous yellow bicycle powered mincer, the whole 2018 operation was 100% solar powered. Bloomin’ well done!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD… THE BHANGRA BUS
Voted number one trader by Shambalans in 2018’s Big Debate, The Bhangra Bus served up hearty thali in Georgia, the converted school bus. Congratulations, Robbie and team!
