For the second year running, we proudly present our free and 100% independent listings app. This bad boy provides a comprehensive list of what’s on where, venue information, food trader listings and an interactive map to help you find your way around. You can also ‘heart’ anything you don’t want to miss, and it’ll remind you 15 minutes before.
WHY DOES IT MATTER THAT IT’S INDEPENDENT?
The decision to build our own app was taken after looking at other “free” of the shelf festival apps that were offered to us and realising the extent to which all of your data would be harvested – as with so much of the internet, if it’s ‘free’, you’re usually the product. With this in mind, data privacy and anonymity is at the core of our app’s architecture and you will not be asked for any personal information when downloading.
WHAT’S NEW FOR THIS YEAR?
Improvements for this year include an offline feedback loop, live scheduling updates to keep you informed of any changes to the programme, and the all new community token that anyone at the event, with the app downloaded, can validate and claim. The token is a blockchain based digital token that can be seen as a badge of participation in the Shambala 2018 community (or, as we’ve been calling it, a Blue Peter badge).
Once on-site head to the Shambala Stage to validate your community token (find it on the app menu bar). Once validated, you’ll be able to locate and access a top-secret venue, The Data Mine. This off the radar, mysterious space has no listing and is shrouded in cypherpunk secrecy. All we know is it will open as darkness descends and will involve more digital adventures and some serious underground sounds of the future… recent dark web postings have been whispering of a pretty epic line up…
The Moody Boyz: AKA Tony Thorpe, legendary underground figure in the UK dance music scene. Catch the ‘Last Train to Destination Africa’, with a selection ranging from, dub-drenched rhythms, acid house and whatever resides in his ‘Mek-em-move’ section!
Sir Real: One of the original residents of the legendary House Of God night, he’s a drummer and producer who has been pushing the underground electronica scene for over 20 years.
Digital: Representing Funktion And Metalheadz we’re expecting some serious blockchain busting drum n bass from the Digital.
Lowdjo: Musical adventurer bringing the underground to the overground since 2000. Coming out of Brussels, with a stack of wax under his arm he is well-equipped to prepare audiences for a frenzy of sounds.
D.WattsRiot: As a member of Fun-da-mental he does not to shy away from what needs to be said, explored, or challenged! Taking in everything from electronica to blues for a two-step among the jungle of dancehall…
ADJ, Kjah, Jinx, Vytol, Goosensei, DJ Christy, D-Human, Elliott Causer, Dr Pepperspray, and the legend that is Phase 2!?!
WHAT ON EARTH IS A BLOCK CHAIN BASED DIGITAL TOKEN AND WHY WOULD I WANT ONE?
Alright, you asked.
This year you will see a new “Community Token” heading on the apps menu bar. This is the start of a new experiment in an alternate web of trust for the Shambala community. It references your unique interaction in time space and place at the festival and anyone with the app can validate their token on site. The decentralised nature of blockchain means this record is unique, anonymous and infallible.
Once you have validated your own token, you will then be able to use your phone to scan and check the validity of someone else’s token and thus their participation in Shambala’s community. This year, Community Token holders will be rewarded with a secret venue, but moving forward this new adventure is designed to push back against the ever more dystopic and invasive digital landscape we live in and look to positive alternatives. Where this type of community reference and new decentralised systems will lead is the really exciting question, we want as many of you as possible to be involved in. We want to use digital for the positive and encourage real world physical interactions through tech. We believe there could be opportunity for our community to support, create, inspire, exchange, debate, determine and trust more and more. Where it will lead and what all the use cases may be is up for debate! If you fancy joining the debate, or finding out more, head to Rebel Soul at 3.30pm on Saturday.
TO BUILD THIS APP FROM THE GROUND UP HAS BEEN A MASSIVE UNDERTAKING AND A HUGE HEARTFELT THANKS GOES OUT TO DAN & PETE NICKLESS, FOR TAKING THIS ON – YOU PAIR OF ABSOLUTE LEGENDS.
