Back in April, we proudly became the first festival in the UK to adopt an employee-ownership model (more on that here).
This meant that, after 26 years of hard grafting, big dreaming and cat-herding, Shambala co-founders Chris, Dan, Jon, Oli & Sid have stepped away from ownership – handing over their beloved festival baby to the team that work year round to make it happen: Sarah, Abi, Karen, Becka, George, Judy, Amia, Tash, James, Janine, Oriana, Andrew & Ellie.
Dan (who is still very much part of our core team as Head of Music), led the Employee Ownership transition and recently sat down with the Association of Independent Festivals‘ news team to chat about the transition: why we chose this route, what it means in practice, and how the model could offer a viable path for other independent festivals.
