Born from a decade-long search for the perfect resonant horn, the Vespa Cougourdon Ourchestra is a singular phenomenon in the contemporary Occitan music scene. The project’s origins trace back to the late 1990s, when a quest for world music textures eventually collided with surrealist art of traditional gourd instruments. This vision was realised in 2006 through a collaboration with luthier Jérôme Désigaud, resulting in an original ensemble of handcrafted cougourdon instruments, percussive string and wind hybrids that bridge ancient folk traditions with the avant-garde.
The orchestra is deeply rooted in the Carnival spirit, inhabiting a theatrical space between wild carnivalesque ecstasy and folk-hero antics. Adorned in elaborate costumes and makeup, the musicians and dancers breathe life into a world of zany totemic figures. Their sound is a hypnotic, trance-like fusion, weaving global influences into a rhythmic tapestry designed for communal interaction. Far more than a musical performance, the Vespa Cougourdon Ourchestra is an invitation to meet, dance, and celebrate within a reimagined folklore that is, quite literally, unique in the world.
