You’re here! You’re already part of this creative, compassionate, climate-conscious, community. But during your adventures in utopia, (and when you get back to reality!) – here’s some things you can do to help champion green causes…
Please bring…
+ Your water bottle, we don’t sell disposable plastic anything.
+ Your hot-drink mug, if you are a tea/coffee/chai fiend like us – as we’ve done away with disposables here too.
+ Show-stopping, second-hand frocks! Bring in some creativity and avoid fast fashion.
+ More wholefoods and less packaging – we have a zero-waste snack truck and organic produce stall on site too!
Please try not to bring…
+ Glitter – all that glitters is… unfortunately pretty damaging for the environment. Even the ‘eco’ or ‘bio’ stuff isn’t much better, so we advise Shambalans swerve it altogether.
+ Face wipes – 11 billion wet wipes are used annually – even ‘biodegradable’ ones are bad news. We recommend using reusable pads with oils, to remove make-up. It works, and leaves your skin feels great.
+ Disposable vapes – Two disposable vapes are thrown away a second, and they are utterly impossible to recycle. Please only bring reusable ones. Disposables are banned at Shambala, and illegal in the UK from June this year.
+ Disposable costumes – Please craft your costumes from second hand or recyclable materials. We’re always blown away by your eco-conscious creativity, so keep it coming!
+ Plastic packaging – Please try to avoid bringing too many snacks in plastic. We find lots of un-eaten crisps, bread and squished bananas. We have a plastic-free snack truck, and organic produce available onsite.
+ Smokers – Avoid plastic tips and switch to biodegradable for your roll ups. You can purchase these from our tobacco kiosks on site.
+ Menstruators – heaps of menstrual products are riddled with plastic, which are environmentally damaging – and reusable alternatives are much kinder on your body too. Check out this amazing guide to learn about eco-friendly alternatives for or visit the Red Sea Travel Agency on site for more information.
Beyond the festival…
Here’s some of our top tips:
+ Know where your stuff comes from! – Investigate the suppliers of your food, clothing, services and products. A great place to start is Ethical Consumer.
+ Clothing – We produce over 80 billion new items of clothing a year, and human rights and ecology continue to suffer. Try shopping second hand and avoiding fast fashion brands. Use Good on You app to rate mainstream brands, but support local, natural-fibre companies where possible.
+ Banking – Can you switch your bank to avoid those who collectively fund over £30 billion for fossil fuels and the destruction of our planet? Visit switchit.green for advice.
+ Food – Eat more local, plant-based and seasonal produce, avoiding the big mega-brands where you can.
+ Energy – Can you investigate switching your home energy to a green tariff? If you are able to, this is a huge move to help support the energy transition we so desperately need.
+ Travel – Try keeping your travel local, grounded, or shared wherever and whenever possible.
+ Materials – We’re drowning in stuff. The less we buy new, and the more we pass on, reuse, revamp and recycle the better.
