Gwenifer picked up a guitar at age eight, shortly after falling headfirst into the raw energy of punk and grunge. After years tearing through the Welsh valleys with various punk bands, her musical path took a sharp turn into the twang of pre-war blues, Appalachian folk and the intricate world of American Primitive guitar.
Channelling that influence into her own distinct voice, Gwenifer began crafting moody, hypnotic, and often ferociously intricate instrumental compositions. She quickly made waves on the UK circuit with her intense live shows.
In 2017, she signed with the acclaimed Tompkins Square label, releasing her debut single ‘Sometimes There’s Blood’ later that year. Her first album, ‘You Never Were Much of a Dancer’ (2018), landed to widespread international acclaim, marking her as a singular force in the folk and experimental music scenes.
What followed was a whirlwind of touring. Gwenifer played headline shows across Europe and made standout appearances at major festivals like Green Man, Supernormal, Black Deer, and Shambala. She’s also shared stages with cult heroes including Michael Chapman, Michael Hurley, Xylouris White, and Charlie Parr.
In early 2020, just as she was preparing to head back into the studio, the pandemic hit. Undeterred, Gwenifer turned her Brighton bedroom into a DIY studio and produced her second album, ‘Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain’—a darker, more adventurous follow-up that drew critical praise for its eerie, cinematic edge and avant-garde leanings.
Expect a set that’s equal parts spellbinding and unrelenting—American Primitive, but with a wild, punk heart.
